The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has taken steps to improve digital learning by providing laptops to eligible students across South Africa. This initiative was introduced to ensure that students funded by NSFAS have access to the necessary digital tools for their studies. While the first batch of laptops was expected to arrive in April, distribution officially began through Open Education South Africa. These devices are meant to support students who are enrolled in NSFAS-funded institutions, including both universities and TVET colleges.
Students at open tertiary institutions supported by NSFAS are eligible to apply for these laptops, as well as those studying at TVET colleges. Although TVET colleges are often ranked lower compared to other higher education institutions, NSFAS has extended the laptop initiative to include their students. This means that TVET students can use the online application system to request a device, making the process simple and accessible.
Each year, NSFAS provides funded students with a once-off learning material allowance, which covers textbooks, supplies, and study tools. If students do not need a laptop, they are advised not to apply, as the allowance is meant to meet various learning needs. For those who do require one, the process is straightforward: students simply visit the official NSFAS website, go to the myNSFAS portal, and follow the instructions to place their laptop order. This initiative is a step toward bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal learning opportunities.

Application Requirements For NSFAS TVET Colleges Laptops
- Signed bursary application form
- 5 Certified copies of ID.
- Proof of income (grant, pensions, etc) of both parents OR
- Affidavit if parents/sponsor/guardians are unemployed, deceased, or their whereabouts are not known
- Latest academic results of the applicant (average of 40%)
- Proof of residence
- I.D. or birth certificates of all household members
- Reports of all students in the household
How To Apply For TVET Colleges’ Laptops

Steps to order & receive a laptop
Register:
- NSFAS-funded students at TVET colleges: You must be a continuing student who was registered in 2025 and is currently registered to study in 2026.
- NSFAS-funded students at universities: You must be registered to study at any public university; both first-time entering and continuing students may apply for a learning device.
Complete the DLD form:
- Collect, complete, and submit the Digital Learning Device (DLD) form to your Financial Aid Office (FAO) on campus.
- Order your laptop on the DLD online order portal via the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za. NSFAS, along with your institution, will verify your details as well as your order.
Collection:
- Once the verification process is complete, an order for your laptop will be placed with our service providers to dispatch the device for delivery.
- Once your laptop is ready, you will be called by the laptop service provider or your institution to arrange collection/delivery.
Identification:
- You must produce your ID/birth certificate and proof of academic registration/student card from your institution before receiving your device.
Agree to the terms and conditions:
- You will be required to agree to the terms and conditions as set out by your institution before receiving your learning device.
Laptop payment:
- Non-NSFAS-funded students who require a device should consult their institutions, as they will remain responsible for the payment of the device and must therefore agree to the payment terms as defined by the institution.

As an NSFAS-funded student, you should upon delivery of the digital learning device, produce a valid ID and proof of registration (or student card), as well as sign the acknowledgement receipt of the digital learning device. You will also be required to agree to the terms and conditions of the device as set out by your institution.
