Which Universities Are Open for Late Application in 2026?
As the 2026 university intake approaches, several institutions are still accepting late applications, offering a second chance to students who missed earlier deadlines or are seeking alternatives via extensions. In South Africa, several public universities have opened late application windows or kept options available if space allows, for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
For instance, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has a late application period scheduled for mid‑January 2026 for selected courses. UNISA is also opening late applications for certain courses between mid‑January 2026. Additionally, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) are among those institutions that still permit late submissions in selected programmes.
However, these late windows usually come with some restrictions: not all programmes will be open, there may be additional fees, and the number of available spots can be limited. It is also essential to act quickly, late deadlines are often tight, and universities may close them once they reach capacity.

University of Pretoria Late Applications 2026
The University of Pretoria bases its decision to accept applicants for non-selection programs in 2026 on available space rather than having a defined deadline.

The University of the Free State is another institution that is still accepting applications for the 2026 academic year (UFS). However, prospective students are encouraged to apply as soon as they can to ensure that they secure their seat before it runs out in their selected program. UFS will be closing applications for 2026 on January 15. For information on how to apply to these universities, visit their websites.
