NSFAS, under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education, provides financial support to public institutions to assist students from low-income backgrounds. All 50 registered public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa are funded through NSFAS. These colleges are spread across all nine provinces, meaning students can find accessible study opportunities no matter where they live.

NSFAS Application Dates

What Does The Nsfas Bursary Covers For Tvet Colleges

Amounts indicated for accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines. The bursary also caters for the following:

• Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
• Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
• Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
• Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
• Transport R7000 per annum
• Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Which Requirements Do Colleges Need To Be Funded By Nsfas?

You will need the following to complete your NSFAS application:

• NSFAS Declaration Form is completed by the Principal of the School or the Social Worker. (Non-SASSA only).
• The Orphan and Vulnerable Child Declaration Form (for applicants under 18 years) is completed by the Social Worker. (Non-SASSA only).
• The NSFAS Consent form is completed by applicant and/or parent/s, guardian or spouse. SASSA recipients do not require this form. (Non-SASSA only).
• If an applicant has indicated that they have a Legal guardian, they must provide proof of guardianship issued by the Court.
• Guardianship (not court appointed) applicant to provide NSFAS declaration form.
• Disability Annexure Form: The form must be filled out by a certified, duly registered medical doctor or another suitably qualified professional (such as an optometrist, physiotherapist, or head of the disability unit), who may confirm the student’s status as disabled and specify the kind of support the student needs as well as how the student would benefit from the suggested support.

  or downloading the NSFAS App from Google Play or the App Store. Your South African ID number will serve as your username.

Step 2: Apply Now

• Once logged in, click on the “Apply” tab. Here, you will need to update your personal information and upload all required supporting documents. These may include a certified copy of your ID, proof of household income, and your academic results.

Step 3: Complete Your Application

• After filling in your details and uploading the necessary documents, submit your application. You will then receive a reference number confirming that your application has been successfully submitted.

Students who have completed a previous qualification, students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum, and students who have already applied, qualified and received funding.
