Where can I re write?
Improving your matric results can open more doors for your education and career. If you did not achieve the results you wanted the first time, you still have the chance to rewrite your matric subjects. This process, known as a Matric Rewrite, allows students to retake their Grade 12 exams to either pass subjects they previously failed or to upgrade their marks for better opportunities. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) supports this through the Second Chance Matric Programme, which was created to help learners complete the requirements for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the Senior Certificate (SC).
The programme is designed to be flexible and accessible. It offers different learning options such as online courses, educational television and radio broadcasts, as well as face-to-face classes at various centers across the country. This ensures that students can choose a learning method that works best for them. One of the advantages is that there is no limit to how many times you can rewrite, as long as you are under the age of 21.
A Matric Rewrite is not only for those who failed subjects, but it is also available for students who passed but wish to add new subjects or improve their marks. By upgrading your results, you increase your chances of qualifying for admission into universities, colleges, or specific career paths. Rewriting your matric can be the key to unlocking new opportunities and setting yourself on the path to achieving your academic and professional goals.

- National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams – March
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
- Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post-2015) – November

Document needed to rewrite matric
The documents you need to apply for and take the matric rewrite exams are listed below.
- You passed the tests required for graduation.
- The written results of your exam.
- Identification document that is a certified copy and lists your (previous) matric results.
- Email and addresses
- Phone number or contact information
Application Procedures For A Matric Rewrite
- You must bring a copy of your ID, as well as your matriculation certificate or statement of results, to register.
When you have obtained all the necessary documentation, you can visit the district office in your area. - If you need extra help to make sure you’re prepared, submit an online application at the Second Chance Programme website.
In-person training and a variety of study materials are available through the Second Chance Programme.
