Qualifications cannot be regarded as equivalent even though they are registered at the same NQF level. Even though they are both registered at the same NQF level, each qualification has a unique purpose and exit-level objectives, therefore they are not interchangeable. Please take note that the National Diploma articulates to the Bachelor of Technology at NQF Level 7 and that the National N Diploma articulates horizontally with a Diploma or Advanced Certificate at NQF Level 6 and vertically with a Bachelors Degree in the same sector at NQF Level 7. Admission to the Senior Certificate 2026
The following learners will qualify for admission to the Senior Certificate: What Is N6 Equivalent To? N6 to degree
- Adult learners who are 21 years and older who have:
- a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); or
- a Grade 9 school report (or the old standard seven). stating that they have passed Grade 9 or Standard 7, or
- a recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level which requires two official languages.
- older than 21-year-old adult learners who are working toward a Senior Certificate.
- Adults above the age of 21 who are still pursuing their National Senior Certificate
- Youth who are not enrolled in school but are between the ages of 18 and 21 and who, according to the Provincial Education Department’s Head of Department, was unable to finish their education due to reasons beyond their control.
- Adult candidates who are 21 years of age or older and have an incomplete NSC may convert to the Senior Certificate or choose to finish the NSC as a part-time candidate. The candidate cannot go back to the NSC and try to finish the NSC qualification if they decide to change to the Senior Certificate.
- Adult candidates who currently hold a qualification but want to raise their standing or performance.
Subjects to be offered
The subjects indicated below, which are a part of the National Senior Certificate’s Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement, will be made available as a part of the Senior Certificate as modified.
The subjects will essentially follow the National Senior Certificate’s Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements, with the exception of the School-Based Assessment (SBA) component.
For any applicant to be eligible for the Senior Certificate, six subjects must be offered (as amended).
The following list of 34 adapted National Senior Certificate subjects must be chosen by adults who have authorized Senior Certificate subject credits but do not meet the six-subject package requirement:
Subjects to be recognized
Subjects for the Senior Certificate that were successfully completed at the Higher Grade and Standard Grade levels before to June 2015, except Lower Grade conversions, will be recognized.
No N3 subjects will be recognized, with the exception of Business English N3, Second Language and/or Sakeafrikaans N3, Second Language.
Candidates for the National Senior Certificate test who attempted it but were unable to finish all of the subject criteria would have all of their prior credits recognized.
Examinations
Each year, the Senior Certificate test is taken in May or June.
Since candidates for the Senior Certificate are exempt from school-based assessment (SBA), the test in the subject will count for the entire grade.
Exams will be given in designated testing locations chosen by the Provincial Education Department.
Additionally, the independent assessment organizations recognized by Umalusi may offer the exam.
Promotion requirements
A Senior Certificate will be achieved by an adult candidate who satisfies the following requirements in these examinations:
- Pass three subjects at 40%, one of which must be an official language at the Home Language level.
- Pass two subjects at 30%, one of which must be an official language at the First Additional or Home Language level.
- Obtain a subminimum of 20% in the sixth subject.
Are qualifications registered at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 4 equivalent to the National Senior Certificate?
The National Senior Certificate and qualifications at NQF level 4 and higher are not interchangeable terms.
One can obtain a school-leaving certificate in a number of ways:
- Complete the National Senior Certificate

- Complete the National Certificate Vocational (NCV)
- Complete the N3 plus 2 Languages to receive the National Senior Certificate
Registration for the 2026 Senior Certificate Examination
Exam registration for 2026 can be done in person at any education district office or online at www.eservices.gov.za.
The deadline for manual and online registration is February 8, 2026.
Preparation for the Senior Certificate Examination
Given that the curriculum is a one-year program, students who plan to take the Senior Certificate examination must start making preparations right away.
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for the pertinent subject is available on the DBE website or at the closest provincial education office for students.
An examination guideline, which offers a foundation for the examination’s structure and format, has been made available by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
On the DBE website, sample CAPS-based exam questions are also available.
