What Happens If I Fail Maths In Matric?
Many students worry that failing Mathematics in their matric year automatically means failing matric as a whole. Fortunately, this is not the case. According to the requirements, learners must take a total of seven subjects, and you can still pass matric even if you fail one subject. This means that as long as you pass six out of the seven, you can qualify for a matric pass. However, it is essential to recognize that Mathematics is a highly valued subject, and failing it can significantly impact your opportunities for further studies.
Most universities and colleges in South Africa require at least 60% in Mathematics if you want to pursue a degree in fields such as engineering, accounting, computer science, or health sciences. Without a strong math result, your options for degree-related courses may be limited. Therefore, while failing math does not mean failing matric, it can limit your choices when applying for higher education.
Passing all your subjects remains the best path to success. Achieving good results in each of the seven subjects gives you a higher chance of qualifying for university admission and gaining access to competitive courses. On the other hand, failing two or more subjects means you will not meet the minimum matric requirements. With this in mind, students are encouraged to give extra effort to Mathematics and other key subjects to secure not only a matric pass but also a bright academic future.

- National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams – March
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
- Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post) – November

Document needed to rewrite matric
The documents you need to apply for and take the matric rewrite exams are listed below.
- You passed the tests required for graduation.
- The written results of your exam.
- An identification document that is a certified copy and lists your (previous) matric results.
- Email and addresses
- Phone number or contact information
Application Procedures For A Matric Rewrite
- You must bring a copy of your ID, as well as your matriculation certificate or statement of results, to register.
When you have obtained all the necessary documentation, you can visit the district office in your area. - If you need extra help to make sure you’re prepared, submit an online application at the Second Chance Programme website.
