What Is NCV?
The National Certificate Vocational, commonly known as NCV, is a practical and skills-based qualification offered in South Africa at Levels 2, 3, and 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). These levels correspond to Grades 10, 11, and 12. The NCV is designed for learners who have completed Grade 9 or equivalent and want to gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills in various vocational fields. Unlike traditional academic routes, this qualification focuses on preparing students for the workplace by combining classroom learning with practical experience, often in real or simulated work environments. The NCV programme covers seven subjects per level. Three of these are fundamental subjects—English or another official language, Life Orientation, and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.
The remaining four subjects are vocational and relate directly to specific career paths like business, engineering, tourism, or information technology. This balanced curriculum ensures students develop communication, critical thinking, and technical skills needed in today’s job market. Students typically study one year at each NCV level, moving from Level 2 to Level 4 by successfully passing all subjects each year. To pass, they must achieve a minimum of 50% in vocational subjects and meet set pass marks in the fundamental subjects.
Upon completing Level 4, students earn a National Certificate Vocational qualification, which can serve as a stepping stone to further education at universities or universities of technology. It also equips them with the skills to enter the workforce or start a business confidently. The NCV is highly valued for its focus on practical learning and relevance to economic demands. It provides an alternative to traditional matric certificates and opens many doors for students looking for hands-on career preparation. The NCV offers a modern and flexible educational path tailored to help learners succeed in the South African job market and beyond.

National Certificate Vocational Entry Requirements
- Grade 9 pass certificate OR equivalent (ABET Certificate or NQF 1 Certificate).
Qualification Fields
NCV Qualifications are offered in the following fields to students;
- NCV Qualification on NQF Level 2: Equivalent to grade 10.
- NCV Qualification on NQF Level 3: Equivalent to grade 11.
- NCV Qualification on NQF Level 4: Equivalent to grade 12.

Simple Steps On How To Apply For the NCV Course
Here are the step-by-step procedures to apply for the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) course at TVET Colleges:
- Get Your Application Form: Visit one of the TVET Colleges to collect the application form, as online applications are not available. You can find the campus locations on the college website.
- Prepare Required Documents: Have certified copies of your ID, latest academic results, proof of residence, and a guardian’s ID (if applicable) ready before filling in the form.
- Complete the Application Form: Fill in all the required information on the application form carefully. Make sure to provide a valid email address and phone number to receive updates about your application.
- Attach Supporting Documents: Attach all the certified documents along with the completed application form. Double-check that everything is complete to avoid delays.
- Submit the Application: Submit your application form and documents at the campus where you collected the form. Ensure you apply before the closing date, usually by the end of September each year.
- Wait for Confirmation: After submission, wait for an admission confirmation by email or SMS. You can also contact the college on their phone line if you have questions or need to check your application status.
