Tvet colleges are currently open and accepting applications for the 2026/2027 academic year. As part of the Higher Education system in South Africa, TVET Colleges accept students who have completed grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 at the high school level. University post-graduates can also enrol for courses at TVET Colleges for more practical exposure. Grade 9 Certificate will be the new Matric and it is something South Africa is heading towards.
The Grade 9 year will become the year in which students decide which direction or stream they want to take. Students can decide on their future careers or further studies. The Department of Basic Education is working on a system that will help all students to complete subjects that meet their interests, abilities and aptitudes.
A Grade 9 Certificate is called a General Education Certificate (GEC). It is a qualification at National Qualification Framework (NQF) Level 1. The Grade 9 Equivalent Certificate is called the ABET Level 4. Grade 9 falls under the General and Education Training band and the purpose of this band is to equip learners with skills that will enable them to start working or to further their studies.

Tvet Colleges 9th Class Online Application Requirements
First-time applicants applying for admission to any of the Tvet Colleges to study in the 9th class are to provide the following documents:
South African Citizens
- A certified copy of your ID
- Latest school results
- Proof of Residence
- Valid Email Address
International Students
- Certified copies of passport
- SAQA-approved foreign qualifications
- Proof of medical insurance or cover
- Valid study permit

- To obtain an application form, go to the college’s website.
- Fill in the blanks.
- Choose a course that corresponds to your qualifications.
- Provide all necessary documentation, such as a valid identification card, certified results, or a certificate.
- Where relevant, provide identification of parents and/or guardians, as well as a death certificate.
- Where applicable, international students must present their passport ID.
