TVET Colleges In South Africa Zimbabwe

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play a vital role in equipping young people with practical skills and knowledge that meet the demands of the job market. In both South Africa and Zimbabwe, TVET institutions are seen as a key solution to youth unemployment, skills shortages, and the need for economic growth through industrialisation and entrepreneurship.

In South Africa, TVET colleges are supported by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and provide a broad range of accredited courses in fields such as engineering, business studies, information technology, hospitality, and agriculture. These colleges are mapped to provide hands-on training and workplace exposure, making graduates job-ready or capable of starting their own businesses. With over 50 public TVET colleges and many private providers, the system continues to evolve to align more closely with industry needs.

Zimbabwe’s TVET sector, overseen by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, also places strong emphasis on technical skills and vocational competencies. Institutions such as polytechnics and vocational training centres provide courses reshaped to economic sectors like construction, mechanics, textiles, and agriculture. Despite facing challenges such as limited funding and outdated equipment, Zimbabwean TVET colleges remain an important part of the country’s education and economic development strategy.

Modules and lectures at the Programme

The programme was aimed at enabling these participants to align local TVET imperatives with regional and global agendas. The training modules were structured as follows:

Government assistance:

Public TVET institutions receive budgetary allotments to cover employment and operational costs as well as funds for capital development initiatives, according to the year’s revenue strategy. While private TVET institutions do not receive any public money, state-assisted TVET providers profit from subsidies for employment costs.

Fee regarding tuition:

Tuition, test fees, and other costs are paid by students directly to the institution. Student fee revenue is managed through the Tertiary Education Development Fund, which is under the Treasury’s control. The Cadetship Scheme, a component of the National Education Training Fund, offers tuition waivers to students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Qualifications and Qualifications Frameworks

National Qualifications Framework (NQF):

As a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Zimbabwe is committed to harmonising and standardising its TVET system with that of other Member States. Zimbabwe is therefore expected to formulate a qualification framework as a way of facilitating standardisation and transferability of qualifications.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education (MHTE) developed the Zimbabwe Examinations and Qualifications Framework (ZIMEQF), which is currently still in its draft form (2010). The coordination and planning remain decentralised with the Higher Education and Examination Council (HEXCO) in charge of Polytechnics, Industrial Training Centres, Youth Training Centres, some secondary schools and private colleges.

The Apprenticeship Authority (AA) is responsible for the certification of skilled workers, and the Nurses Council oversees the certification of nurses under the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare. A number of other Ministries ensure certification in their specific fields.
