To become a qualified nurse, you must go through proper nursing training at one of the accredited nursing colleges in the country. These colleges are carefully monitored to make sure they meet the required standards. The South African Nursing Council (SANC) is the official body that accredits both the nursing colleges and the courses they offer.
There are different study paths available for students who want to become nurses, and the option you qualify for usually depends on your high school results. You can study towards a Higher Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or even a Postgraduate qualification in nursing. This flexibility allows students to enter the profession at different levels and continue upgrading their qualifications as they grow in their careers.
Because of the growing demand for healthcare workers in the country, more and more students are showing interest in nursing. For a college or course to operate legally, it must be approved by SANC in line with the Nursing Act of 2005. Basic Diplomas:
- Diploma in Nursing (General, Community, Psychiatry) and Midwifery: Four Years: R425
- Diploma in General Nursing Science (bridging Course): Two Years: R683
- Diploma in One Year Midwifery: One Year: R254
Certificate Programmes:
- Enrolled Nursing (EN): Two Years: R2175
- Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary (ENA): One Year: R2176
Short Learning Programmes:
- Anesthesiology for all categories of nurses (4 weeks)
- Primary Health Care (6 weeks)
- HIV/AIDS and TB Management Certificate (8 weeks)
Pre Registration Programmes
- 4 Year Course leading to registration as a Nurse (General, Psychiatric and Community) and Midwife
- 2 Year Course leading to registration as a General Nurse (Bridging Course)
Post Registration Programme
- 1 Year Midwifery
Post Basic Clinical Programme
- 1 Year Diploma in Medical-Surgical Nursing with specialisation in Critical Care [General]
