The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) helps South African students access higher education by providing financial support in the form of bursaries. For the 2026–2027 academic year, NSFAS has officially opened its online application portal to students studying at all public universities and TVET colleges in the country. This funding opportunity is designed to support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds by covering essential study costs such as tuition fees, accommodation, and learning materials.
The NSFAS online application for 2026–2027 opens on 1 November and will close on 30 January. During this period, all interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline, as late submissions are not accepted. To apply, students must first create an NSFAS account, which will allow them to access the online system and complete the application process.
It is important that applicants carefully review the NSFAS requirements to ensure they qualify for funding before starting their application. The process is straightforward and guided by clear instructions to make it easier for first-time and returning students to apply successfully. By securing NSFAS support, many students can focus on their studies without the financial burden that often prevents them from completing their qualifications. This article provides key information on the NSFAS application process for 2026–2027, including who qualifies, how to apply, and what supporting documents are needed.
