In South Africa, there are 50 registered and accredited public TVET Colleges which operate on approximately 364 campuses spread across the rural and urban areas of the country. The Tvet colleges are overseen by the Department of Higher Education (DHET) and the courses and programmes offered are regulated by Umalusi. Many students who get enrolled into these Tvet Colleges sometimes go through financial hardships which eventually drop some out of college. In bringing a solution to this problem, the South African Government in collaboration with the Tvet Colleges offers Nsfas bursaries to students.
NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges. Do you wish to study or are already studying at a public TVET college and come from a family with an income of R350 000 or less, dont worry, apply for Nsfas? Students who will be studying in Tvet Colleges for the 2026 academic year can start applying for Nsfas from the 1st of September through to the 31st of January 2026.
For the past years, Nsfas has been an efficient and effective provider of financial aid to students from poor and working-class families in a sustainable manner that promotes access to, and success in, higher and further education and training, in pursuit of South Africa’s national and human resource development goals.
When To Apply Online For Nsfas For 2026/2027
Students who have gained admission into the academic year 2026 in any of the public Tvet colleges in South can apply for Nsfas. Applications for Nsfas for the 2026/2027 academic year will be open from September and it will be closing on the 31st of January 2026.
Who can Apply For Nsfas In 2026/2027
The following persons are qualified to apply for Nsfas:
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Yes, Nsfas is currently open for all the public Tvet Colleges. Provided you have been given admission or currently studying at any of the Tvet Colleges, you can apply to receive bursaries from Nsfas.
How Much Does Nsfas Give To Students In 2026/2027
The amounts indicated are for accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials that need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines:
- Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Please attach certified copies of the following documents: (All the certified copies must not be older than 3 months) Your documents can be certified at the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office. If you are under the age of 18 or if you are 18 and older and are STILL DEPENDENT on the household income of your parent or legal guardian, then this also applies to you:
- Certified copy of your Identity Document
- A copy of your ID or birth certificate.
- ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse (or death certificate where applicable).
- Marriage certificate (where applicable).
- Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable).
- Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income (if you are a Sassa grant recipient, no proof of income is required)
- Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form
