Is Ekurhuleni a Public College?
When looking into options for higher education in South Africa, many students and parents often come across the name “Ekurhuleni” and wonder whether it refers to a public college. To answer this clearly: Ekurhuleni is not a single public college, but rather a name associated with a region that hosts several public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The name “Ekurhuleni” itself refers to a large metropolitan municipality located in Gauteng, which includes towns like Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni, and others. Within this region, there are well-known public colleges such as Ekurhuleni East TVET College and Ekurhuleni West TVET College, both of which are accredited and government-funded institutions.
These colleges provide a broad range of nationally recognized qualifications, including National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and NATED (N1–N6) courses, aimed at equipping students with practical and theoretical knowledge for various careers. Since they are public institutions, they are funded and regulated by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), which means they generally offer more affordable tuition fees and access to government bursaries like NSFAS.
It is important to understand the distinction between the Ekurhuleni region and the specific colleges operating within it. Many students mistakenly assume “Ekurhuleni College” is one institution, but in reality, it is necessary to identify whether you are referring to Ekurhuleni East or Ekurhuleni West, as each has its own campuses, programs, and admission procedures.
