Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play a vital role in equipping South Africa’s youth with practical skills and knowledge that meet the demands of the modern workforce. These institutions are overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), which ensures quality, relevance, and accessibility across the country’s post-school education landscape.
TVET colleges are mapped to provide students with hands-on training in a broad range of fields such as engineering, business studies, hospitality, information technology, agriculture, and more. Unlike traditional academic institutions, TVET colleges focus on vocational and occupational education, preparing students for specific careers or to start their own businesses. This makes them an excellent choice for individuals who want to gain work-ready skills and enter the job market faster.
The DHET plays a central role in the regulation and funding of these colleges, ensuring that programmes provided are aligned with industry standards and national development goals. Through strategic partnerships with businesses and government entities, TVET colleges offer workplace-based learning opportunities, which help students gain valuable real-world experience.
With over 50 public TVET colleges and multiple campuses spread across South Africa, access to technical and vocational education has improved significantly. These colleges not only cater to school leavers but also to adults seeking to upskill or change career paths.
