What Is FET College?
A Fet can be described as Further Education and Training. This college or institute refers to education and training that is provided from Grade 10 to Grade 12. This FET education and training also includes career-oriented education and training offered in technical colleges, community colleges, and private colleges. In order for a FET College to be reputable, it has to be registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
The courses offered on this level are great for preparing students for a career in a certain field because the courses focus on equipping the student with a skill set and knowledge that is applicable to a specific field. These colleges also cater for students who do not thrive in traditional schools by offering job-specific courses. Students learn theoretical and practical skills through TVET colleges.
Almost everyone can study at a FET college, as there are very few entrance requirements. The reason for this is that a FET college focuses on providing further education to as many students as possible. There are many FET Colleges in South Africa. Some FET colleges are subject-specific, meaning that they only offer courses that focus on one specific field. Others offer a variety of courses, covering almost every field of interest.

Difference Between FET and TVET
In South Africa, FET and TVET are often confused, but they refer to the same system. FET stands for Further Education and Training, which covers education beyond high school, including vocational, technical, and career-focused programs. TVET, or Technical and Vocational Education and Training, is the modern term used for FET colleges, highlighting their focus on practical skills and workplace readiness.
TVET colleges are not only for people who did not finish Matric. They aim to provide students with critical skills and practical knowledge for specific jobs. These colleges prepare learners for work in fields like engineering, hospitality, IT, and business, while also giving a foundation for further studies.
Who Qualifies For Fet College?
Institutions for higher learning, such as universities, have strict and difficult entrance requirements, which can be discouraging. However, FET colleges don’t want to discourage you from achieving your goals. Therefore, you can do it with a grade 9 certificate. Also, make sure you have the following qualifications:
- Be at least 16 years old
- NC(V): Have a Grade 9 Qualification or ABET level 4 certificate
- Report 191 NATED: Have a matric certificate or be completing matric

How To Apply For Fet College
To apply for the Fet College, kindly follow the process below:
Step 1: Do the pre-screening test:
- You will be requested to sign an acknowledgement that you prefer to make your own choice outside of the placement screening
Step 2: Get your application form
- Accept that Fet college will communicate with me during the application process using the e-mail address and cellphone number.
- Please ensure that you provide a valid and working e-mail address and one cellphone number during the application process
Step 3: Complete your application form in full:
- Birth Certificate/Identity Document (Proof of application for new ID/Passport)
Step 4: Attach all supporting documents:
All applicants starting a new qualification are required to upload the following certified documents:
- Certificates/Qualifications
- Recent Academic results
- Municipal billing document/other account statements (not older than 3 months)
- A valid study permit (Foreign national students)
- The South African Qualification Authority’s (SAQA)
- Evaluation Certificate (foreign qualifications)
Step 5: Submit your application.
- A confirmation email will be sent to you with all the application information.
