It’s important to keep in mind that South African TVET College students are also funded by NSFAS. This is a result of NSFAS’s funding policy, which covers public institutions, including public universities and public TVET colleges. In South Africa, there are other options outside the university for continuing your education.
The Department of Higher Education and Training considers Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges as institutions of choice where you can pursue your education. African citizens enrolled in one of 25 public universities or 50 TVET colleges will be eligible for NSFAS funding. Unfortunately, NSFAS does not offer financial aid to private colleges.
Remember that if you want NSFAS to help pay for your tuition, you must provide evidence that your household’s annual combined income is less than R350 000. What Does The Bursary Cover?

UNIVERSITY
- Accommodation
- As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences
TVET
- Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum
Who Qualifies For NSFAS Funding?
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
Who Should Not Apply?
- Students who have completed a previous qualification.
- Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
- Students who have already applied, qualified, and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies, provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
Nsfas Bursary Academic Requirements
To be eligible for NSFAS financing to attend a TVET college, you must have completed Grades 9 through 12, and Grade 12 to be eligible for funding to attend a university or TVET college. Before receiving any financing from NSFAS, if your funding application is approved, you must fulfil the university’s or TVET college’s academic admission standards.
What Are The Requirements To Apply?
- Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
- Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
- Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility - Must have email and cell phone number
What Are The Required Documents?
- Copy of student ID / Birth certificate
- Copy of parent/s/s or guardian/ spouse ID
- Smart card: both sides of the card are required
- Proof of income (where applicable)
- Persons living with disability (Disability Annexure A form)
- An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
- An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or an abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA
The system will generate a list of necessary documents for upload based on the kind of application. Any affidavits or driver’s licenses are rejected as identification documents.
How And Where To Apply For NSFAS Funding?
You can apply online via www.nsfas.org.za using a cellphone, tablet, or computer. Follow these simple steps to apply:
Step 1: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account
Step 3: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
Step 4: Upload required supporting documents where applicable
Step 5: Click on ‘Submit’
Do not worry if you do not have a digital device or internet access. You can still apply by going to your local Thusong Centre or National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and following the same procedures.

NSFAS does not fund students at College SA, as it mainly supports public universities and TVET colleges.
