The National Certificate (Engineering & Related Design) is a program at each of Levels 2, 3, and 4 of the NQF. This program is designed to provide both the theory and practice of Engineering & Related Design. The practical component of the study will be offered in a real workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. It will provide students with an opportunity to experience work situations during the period of study.

Under the supervision of the Department of Higher Education and Training, Umalusi provides quality assurance for this NC(V) program. The program combines theory and practice and gives students a wide variety of theoretical and practical expertise in the field of mechanical engineering. For students who want to pursue careers as competent artisans in the field of mechanical engineering, the NC(V) Engineering and Related Design course offers a wide choice of job options.

The potential candidates will be introduced to a variety of mechanical engineering topics. To create a comprehensive grasp of mechanical engineering, the academic program combines theoretical principles and practical practice. As a result, students are equipped to participate in the tasks and procedures anticipated in the workplace.

If they successfully complete the Level 4 qualification, students may look for jobs in their field of study. Students who want to advance in their academic studies can enroll in Mechanical Engineering courses N4–N6 or submit an application to another higher education facility, like the University of Technology. Minimum entry requirements for the program

You need the following to be admitted to the National Certificate (Engineering & Related Design) at NQF Level 2:

  • A year-end school report for grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 certificates; or
  • An NQF Level 1 qualification; or
  • An approved bridging program designed for the specific purpose to access NQF Level 2; or
  • A Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment to meet the basic requirements for access to NQF Level

How long is the qualification?

At each of the NQF levels of study, the National Certificate (Engineering & Related Design) program lasts a full year.
Upon successful completion of Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 of study, a student receives a certificate.

What courses are included in the National Certificate in Engineering and Related Design?

A student must take a total of 7 topics to earn a National Certificate (Engineering & Related Design).
3 core subjects and 4 career-related subjects are included.

The 3 fundamental subjects are:

  • First additional language – which must be the language of teaching and learning;
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy; and
  • Life Orientation.
