A Higher National Diploma, or HND for short, is a higher education certificate awarded following the completion of a two-year academic programme with a focus on the workforce. The goal of an HND is to give students the practical information and abilities they need to excel in the industry by emphasising “learning by doing. If you’re interested in a hands-on career in sectors such as hospitality, engineering, business, marketing or social care, an HND qualification could be more beneficial by providing you with some practical experience.
HNDs can be studied in a classroom or via distance learning, however, students are evaluated through completing assignments, and projects that are set throughout the course. In order to study for an HND, you will need some previous qualifications. Most HND courses require you to have gained at least one A-Level, or an equivalent qualification.
Most Tvet Colleges accept HND qualifications as part of an alternative route to obtaining a degree. Upon completing an HND, graduates can progress into usually the 3rd year of a degree this is often referred to as a top-up. After successfully completing three years, a student may complete the studying period with not only an HND but also an Honours degree.

Tvet Colleges may have varied application deadlines depending on the college and the semester an applicant is enrolling for. In most circumstances, applications are accepted from April 1 through November 30 2025. First-time applicants applying for admission to any of the Tvet Colleges to study an HND course are to provide the following documents:

- SAQA-approved foreign qualifications

- Fill in the blanks.
- Choose a course that corresponds to your qualifications.

- Where relevant, provide identification of parents and/or guardians, as well as a death certificate.
