When Are TVET Colleges Opening After Lockdown in Ghana
The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant disruptions to every sector of society, with education being one of the hardest hit. In Ghana, like in many other countries, schools and colleges were forced to shut down to help curb the spread of the virus. Among the institutions affected were the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, which play a vital role in equipping young Ghanaians with practical skills for the job market. As the country begins to recover and restrictions are gradually eased, many students, parents, and educators are asking the same question, if the TVET colleges reopen?
The reopening of educational institutions in Ghana has been done in phases, guided by the government’s response to the evolving health situation. For TVET colleges, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana TVET Service and other stakeholders, has announced timelines aligned with safety protocols and the academic calendar. While some institutions have already reopened for final-year students to complete their practical training and assessments, full reopening for all levels is expected to follow a carefully structured plan.
As of now, government officials have emphasized that reopening dates will continue to depend on health data and the readiness of institutions to follow COVID-19 safety measures. TVET institutions are expected to implement strict hygiene protocols, ensure social distancing, and provide protective equipment where necessary.
