Everything About Electrical Engineering NATED Subjects and Requirements:

The NATED programs are all trimester-based and range from the National Certificate level 1 (equivalent to an NQF qualification level 2) up to a National Certificate level 6, including Electrical Heavy Current (which is equivalent to an NQF qualification level 5). After acquiring a minimum of 18 months of practical job experience, you can apply for your N6 Diploma.

You have the chance to enhance your knowledge and credentials in the respective electrical and mechanical engineering fields of study through public FET College programs like Electrical Heavy Current, making you more employable in the industry. One of the top 10 skills shortages in South Africa is for electrical engineers. Industries including power or energy generation, telecommunication, engineering, computer, building, energy, manufacturing, transport, and utility firms, and the armed services are in dire need of electrical engineers.

Students can work with large electrical currents (for power and household wiring, industrial and civil industries), as well as low electrical currents, due to the N1 through N6 Certificates included in the National Certificate: Electrical Engineering (such as used for required for digital and industrial electronics). What Are NATED Electrical Engineering Courses

  • The NATED Electrical Engineering programme covers levels N1 to N6, after which students can complete 18–24 months of practical workplace experience to qualify for a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  • These qualifications are offered at various public and private TVET Colleges across South Africa.

Electrical Engineering Nated Subjects In N1–N3

The foundation phase (N1–N3) focuses on the basics of electrical trade theory and engineering sciences. Subjects usually include:

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Industrial Electronics
  • Electrical Trade Theory

This phase prepares students with the fundamentals before progressing to higher levels.

Electrical Engineering Nated Subjects In N4–N6

From N4 to N6, students begin to specialize in either Heavy Current (Power Engineering) or Light Current (Electronics/Instrumentation).

N4 Electrical Engineering Subjects (Heavy Current):

  • Electrotechnics
  • Industrial Electronics
  • Engineering Science
  • Mathematics

N5 Electrical Engineering Subjects (Heavy Current):

  • Electrotechnics
  • Power Machines
  • Industrial Electronics
  • Mathematics

N6 Electrical Engineering Subjects (Heavy Current):

  • Electrotechnics
  • Power Machines
  • Industrial Electronics
  • Mathematics

For Light Current/Instrumentation, subject combinations may differ slightly, often including Logic Systems, Digital Electronics, or Instrumentation Technology.

Diploma in Electrical Engineering (NATED Subjects)

  • After completing N4–N6, students can apply for a National N Diploma in Electrical Engineering once they have gained 24 months of relevant workplace experience.
  • The diploma confirms both theoretical study and practical training, making graduates employable as technicians, artisans, or engineering assistants in industries such as construction, power supply, electronics, and manufacturing.

How long is the qualification?

  • The Nated National Certificate (Electrical Engineering), the program is a full or part-time three (03) months program at each of the Nated (N). A student is issued a certificate on the successful completion of each Nated. (N) of study, that is N1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

What career opportunities do you have after completing the Nated National Certificate (Electrical Engineering)?

The Nated National Certificate (Electrical Engineering) provides an opportunity to access careers in any of the sectors listed below:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Sound Technology
  • Theatre Technology
  • Process Level Control
