In 2026, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in Zambia continue to play a vital role in equipping young people with practical skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship. As the country works towards achieving its Vision 2030 goals and fostering inclusive economic growth, TVET institutions have become increasingly central to national development efforts. These colleges provide training in diverse areas such as agriculture, construction, hospitality, engineering, information technology, and health sciences, responding directly to the needs of local industries and communities.
Over the years, Zambia has made significant investments in expanding and improving TVET infrastructure, curriculum, and access. In 2026, more young Zambians are turning to vocational education as a viable alternative to traditional academic pathways. With a strong focus on hands-on training and real-world experience, TVET colleges provide students the opportunity to gain market-ready skills that increase their employability or support them in starting their own businesses.
Furthermore, the integration of digital technologies into training programs has enhanced the quality of learning, especially in urban centers. Government partnerships with private sector players and international organizations have also helped in upgrading equipment, training instructors, and aligning programs with global standards.
However, challenges remain, including the need for more qualified trainers, better access in rural areas, and increased awareness among youth about the opportunities TVET can provide. Despite these hurdles, the future of vocational education in Zambia looks promising. As demand for skilled labor rises, TVET colleges are expected to continue expanding their reach and impact, empowering a generation of youth to drive the country’s social and economic transformation.

Zambia’s TVET system is supported by a variety of funding sources.
The government provides funding to public TVET institutions through the relevant Ministries. Funds are used to subsidise training fees and for operational costs of TVET institutions.
Charities and donors ensure funding for community-based and faith-based TVET providers. Those organisations subsidise TVET training for socio-economically disadvantaged learners.
Training fees are a significant source of funding for both public and private TVET providers. However, fees charged by private institutions are not regulated, while public TVET institutions need to seek approval for training fees from the corresponding Ministries.
The industry provides funding for enterprise-based training, allowing students to train directly at the workplace.
Established under the TVET (Amendment) Act. No. 11 of 2005, the TEVET Fund serves as a source of funding for public and private providers. The Government provides funds for the Fund, which are consequently awarded to pre-determined training programmes at public training institutions.
Assurance of high quality
The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVETA) grades registered training institutions on the basis of their ability to satisfy the minimum training standards. It inspects TVET institutions and awards grades one, two, or three.
Descriptions of grades:
Grade One – Very Good
The institution is very good in terms of management, staff, and facilities, and shows very few weaknesses.
Grade Two – Good
The institution offers good basic quality training but shows some problems in management, trainers’ qualifications, or facilities. It shows more strengths than weaknesses, but there are areas in need of improvement.
Grade Three – Satisfactory
The institution shows a mixture of strengths and weaknesses in the above-mentioned quality elements. It barely meets the minimum training standards.
