TVET Colleges In South Africa Zambia
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play an important role in the development of skills and the promotion of economic growth across Africa. In both South Africa and Zambia, TVET institutions are mapped to equip students with practical, job-ready skills that meet the needs of local industries and communities. These colleges provide a broad range of programs, including engineering, agriculture, hospitality, information technology, business studies, and artisan training.
In South Africa, TVET colleges form part of the national strategy to combat youth unemployment and bridge the gap between education and the labor market. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) oversees the country’s 50 public TVET colleges, which have multiple campuses across different provinces. These colleges offer the National Certificate (Vocational), or NC(V), as well as NATED (N1–N6) programs that lead to nationally recognized qualifications. TVET colleges in South Africa are supported by government funding and work closely with the private sector to ensure their programs remain relevant and responsive to economic demands.
Similarly, in Zambia, TVET institutions fall under the Ministry of Technology and Science, with the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) regulating standards and curriculum. Zambia’s TVET sector has seen significant reform and investment in recent years, aiming to improve the quality of training, expand access, and encourage entrepreneurship. The focus is not only on formal employment but also on empowering individuals to start their own businesses.

The Zambian Qualifications Framework (ZQF) has 10 levels, with TVET situated at Levels 3 to 6. Trade test certificates are positioned at Level 3, followed by craft certificates (Level 4), advanced/technician certificates (Level 5), and diplomas (Level 6). These programs vary in duration and training content. Trade test certificates typically take 1 year of study, while the completion of diploma programs usually takes 3 years.

Assurance of high quality
The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVETA) grades registered training institutions on the basis of their ability to satisfy the minimum training standards. It inspects TVET institutions and awards grades one, two, or three.
Descriptions of grades:
Grade One – Very Good
The institution is very good in terms of management, staff, and facilities, and shows very few weaknesses.
Grade Two – Good
The institution offers good basic quality training but shows some problems in management, trainers’ qualifications, or facilities. It shows more strengths than weaknesses, but there are areas in need of improvement.
Grade Three – Satisfactory
The institution shows a mixture of strengths and weaknesses in the above-mentioned quality elements. It barely meets the minimum training standards.
