If you did not complete matric or want to improve your results, you still have the opportunity to achieve this through the Adult Matric and Matric Rewrite programs. These options give students a second chance to earn a nationally recognized matric certificate and open more doors for future studies or employment. The process is flexible because you can register online for the exam, although the final exams must be written in person at designated DHET examination centers in your area.
Through institutions like Matric College, you can study via distance learning, which allows you to complete your coursework from the comfort of your home. This makes it easier for working adults, parents, or anyone with a busy schedule to balance their daily responsibilities while preparing for their matric. You will be able to plan your study time, submit assignments, and get the support you need without attending traditional classes.
It is important to note that a Matric Rewrite Online course is only available if you have previously written Matric but want to improve your marks. On the other hand, the Adult Matric program is for those who never completed matric and would like to earn the qualification. Both routes give you the chance to work towards the same recognized matric certificate. Whether you choose to upgrade or rewrite, online matric courses provide a flexible path to achieving your academic goals. The only step that remains in person is writing your final exam at an approved examination center.
When to Register for Adult Matric Exams?
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) usually opens registration for Adult Matric exams between October/November and January. You can complete your registration either online or by visiting a registration centre in person. Make sure to have all the required documents ready when you apply. The Adult Matric, also called the Senior Certificate (Amended), is written during the May/June exam period.
The following opportunities to rewrite exist:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams – March
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
- Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post) – November

The documents you need to apply for and take the matric rewrite exams are listed below.
- You passed the tests required for graduation.
- The written results of your exam.
- An identification document that is a certified copy and lists your (previous) matric results.

Application Procedures For A Matric Rewrite
- You must bring a copy of your ID, as well as your matriculation certificate or statement of results, to register.
When you have obtained all the necessary documentation, you can visit the district office in your area. - If you need extra help to make sure you’re prepared, submit an online application at the Second Chance Programme website.
In-person training and a variety of study materials are available through the Second Chance Programme.
