Can I Upgrade My Matric At Unisa?
Many learners who did not pass matric with the results they needed often wonder if they can upgrade their matric through the University of South Africa (UNISA). Since UNISA is one of the most recognised distance learning universities in South Africa, it is natural for students to think it may offer such opportunities. However, it is important to note that UNISA does not directly provide a matric upgrade programme. The university is focused on higher education qualifications such as degrees, diplomas, and postgraduate studies, which means that you need to already have a valid matric certificate or equivalent before you can apply.
If you are looking to improve your matric results, you will need to make use of institutions that are accredited by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to offer Adult Matric or matric rewrite programmes. These allow you to re-attempt certain subjects or complete your Senior Certificate (Amended) if you never wrote matric before. Once you successfully upgrade your results, you will then be able to meet the entry requirements needed to study at UNISA.
So, while you cannot upgrade your matric directly at UNISA, the university can become your next step once you have improved your results. This pathway helps many students gain access to higher education, even if their initial matric marks were not what they expected. In other words, upgrading your matric elsewhere creates the foundation for furthering your studies at UNISA and building the future you want.
