Many students do not pass all their subjects the first time they write matric, but the good news is that there are opportunities to rewrite or upgrade their results. If you are under the age of 21, you can rewrite the matric as many times as needed without any restrictions. Once you turn 21, you may apply for a Matric Upgrade, and this can also be done more than once if necessary. This gives students a fair chance to improve their results and achieve the qualifications they need for further studies or career opportunities.
With the option to study online, preparing for a matric rewrite has become more flexible. However, it is important to note that while learning can take place online, exams must be written in person at designated government-approved venues. To make the process easier, the Department of Basic Education introduced the Second Chance Matric Programme. This initiative supports learners who want to rewrite their subjects, ensuring they meet the requirements for either the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the Senior Certificate (SC).
By offering this support, the programme not only helps learners complete their education but also contributes to the national goal of improving learner retention. Currently, the Department of Basic Education is accepting applications for the NSC examinations. The following opportunities to rewrite exist:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams – March
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
- Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post) – November

The documents you need to apply for and take the matric rewrite exams are listed below.
- You passed the tests required for graduation.

- An identification document that is a certified copy and lists your (previous) matric results.

Application Procedures For A Matric Rewrite
- You must bring a copy of your ID, as well as your matriculation certificate or statement of results, to register.
