How Much Does It Cost To Rewrite Matric?
The Matric Rewrite registration process is completely free, making it an accessible option for students who want to improve their Grade 12 results. The only cost involved is the tuition fee charged by the college or school where you choose to prepare for your rewrite. How much you pay depends on the number of subjects you want to retake, giving you the flexibility to focus only on the areas where you need improvement. For students under the age of 21, there is no limit on how many times you can rewrite your matric, which provides multiple opportunities to achieve the results you need.
Online study options are also available for Matric Rewrite, allowing learners to prepare at their own pace and from any location. However, exams must still be written at an official government-approved venue. When you register, you will be informed of the exact exam centre assigned to you. If you do not pass your rewrite the first time, you can register again the following year and continue until you pass or turn 21. Once you reach 21, you can register for a Matric Upgrade programme instead.
Another benefit of the Matric Rewrite process is the option to add new subjects to your Matric Certificate, even if you have already passed. This can create more opportunities when applying for courses at universities or colleges, and in some cases, it may even strengthen your chances when applying for jobs.

- National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
- Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post) – November

The documents you need to apply for and take the matric rewrite exams are listed below.
- You passed the tests required for graduation.
- The written results of your exam.
- An identification document that is a certified copy and lists your (previous) matric results.

Application Procedures For A Matric Rewrite
- You must bring a copy of your ID, as well as your matriculation certificate or statement of results, to register.
When you have obtained all the necessary documentation, you can visit the district office in your area. - If you need extra help to make sure you’re prepared, submit an online application at the Second Chance Programme website.
