Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges are an essential part of South Africa’s education system, offering practical and career-focused learning opportunities. At present, there are 50 licensed public TVET Colleges operating under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), with a total of 364 campuses spread across urban centres and rural areas. This wide reach ensures that young people and adults from all backgrounds can access quality education close to home. TVET Colleges are regulated by the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006, which ensures that they maintain high standards in both teaching and training.

These colleges are known for equipping students with hands-on experience and technical knowledge that match the requirements of the labour market. Unlike purely academic institutions, TVET Colleges combine theory with practice, giving students the skills they need to be job-ready immediately after completing their studies. Another important benefit of TVET Colleges is their role in developing entrepreneurial skills. Graduates can use the knowledge gained to start businesses in areas such as catering, construction, hospitality, hairdressing, tourism, and information technology.

This entrepreneurial focus makes TVET Colleges not only a pathway to employment but also a foundation for self-employment and economic independence. Through strong partnerships with industry and commerce, TVET Colleges ensure their programmes remain relevant and in line with current workforce demands. For students looking to build a successful career or business, these institutions provide a practical, affordable, and future-focused option.
